To most, a rich person is someone with endless money in his bank account, multiple homes, regular holidays, nice clothes, exotic cars, luxury items, latest gadgets and all the comforts of life!
But, the fourth-richest person in the world, the billionaire Bill Gates has a slightly different outlook on this. Let’s see what it is!
A few years ago, there was a conference in the United States on investment and finance. One of the many illustrious speakers was Bill Gates and during the question and answer session, he was asked a question that had everyone laughing.
The question was, if he, one of the richest men in the world, could accept that his daughter marries a poor or modest man.
The answer Gates gave, however, shocked everyone.
“My daughter won’t marry a poor man,” said Bill Gates, responding to the question and then went on to explain his point.
He said, “First, understand that wealth does not mean having a well-filled bank account. Wealth is primarily the ability to create wealth.”
“For example, someone who wins a lottery or a round of gambling cannot be considered rich, even if he has a hundred million! He’s just a poor man with a lot of money. That is why, 90% of the lottery millionaires go back to being poor within only five years!
“We also have some rich people who don’t have money. For example, most entrepreneurs in the world.
Though they don’t have money right now, they are on their way to earning wealth, after all, they are developing their financial intelligence and that for me is equivalent to wealth (i.e., having the ability to earn) and hence can be well categorized as rich.”
“So, where does the difference between a rich and a poor person lie?”
“Simply put, the rich can die to become rich, while the poor can kill to stay.”
“If you see a young man with visions and goals, and an unfaltering desire to learn continuously, know that he is a rich man.”
“If you see a young man who thinks that the problem is the state, and that the rich are all thieves and is constantly criticizing and cribbing, know that he is a poor man.”
“The rich are convinced that they only need information and training to take off, while the poor believe that others must give them money, for them to take off.”
“When I say my daughter is not going to marry a poor man, I am, in no way, talking about his economic status. I’m only pointing to this man’s inability to create wealth.”
He added, “Excuse me for saying this, but most criminals are poor people. They lack the ability to create wealth on their own. Hence, when they see money, they lose their minds and that’s why they steal and rob!”
“One day, a bank guard found a bag full of money. He immediately took the bag to the bank manager. At that time, people called this gentleman an idiot. But, little did they know that this gentleman was actually a rich man who just had no money!”
“One year later, that very bank offered him a job as a receptionist. Three years later, he became the customer service manager in that bank and then, ten years later, he was made the regional branch manager! Today, he manages hundreds of employees and his present annual bonus is far more than the amount he could have stolen in the past!”
And then Gates concluded, “Wealth is just a state of mind, my friends! “

बहुतेक लोकांसाठी श्रीमंत व्यक्ती म्हणजे ती ज्याच्या बँक खात्यात अपार पैसा आहे, अनेक घरे आहेत, वारंवार सुट्ट्या घेतो, आकर्षक कपडे, आलिशान गाड्या, लक्झरी वस्तू, नवीनतम गॅजेट्स आणि जीवनातील सर्व सुखसोयी आहेत!
पण, जगातील चौथा सर्वाधिक श्रीमंत व्यक्ती अब्जाधीश बिल गेट्स याबाबत थोडा वेगळा दृष्टिकोन बाळगतो. चला, पाहूया त्यांचा दृष्टिकोन काय आहे!
काही वर्षांपूर्वी अमेरिकेत इन्व्हेस्टमेंट आणि फायनान्स या विषयावर एक परिषद झाली होती. अनेक प्रसिद्ध वक्त्यांपैकी एक होते बिल गेट्स. प्रश्नोत्तर सत्रादरम्यान त्यांना एक प्रश्न विचारण्यात आला, ज्यामुळे संपूर्ण सभागृहात हास्याचा गडगडाट झाला.
प्रश्न असा होता जगातील सर्वात श्रीमंत लोकांपैकी एक असलेले आपण, आपल्या मुलीचे लग्न एखाद्या गरीब किंवा मध्यमवर्गीय व्यक्तीशी होऊ देऊ शकता का?
गेट्स यांनी दिलेले उत्तर मात्र सगळ्यांना थक्क करणारे होते.
“माझी मुलगी कधीच गरीब माणसाशी लग्न करणार नाही,” असे बिल गेट्स म्हणाले, आणि नंतर त्यांनी आपले मत स्पष्ट केले.
ते म्हणाले, “सर्वप्रथम हे समजून घ्या की, संपत्ती म्हणजे फक्त बँक खात्यातील पैशांचा ढीग नाही. खरी संपत्ती म्हणजे संपत्ती निर्माण करण्याची क्षमता!”
“उदाहरणार्थ, एखाद्याने लॉटरी जिंकली किंवा जुगारात मोठी रक्कम मिळवली, तर त्याला श्रीमंत म्हणता येत नाही, जरी त्याच्याकडे शंभर कोटी असले तरी! तो फक्त पैशांनी श्रीमंत असलेला गरीब माणूस आहे. म्हणूनच, ९०% लॉटरी विजेते पाच वर्षांच्या आत पुन्हा गरीब होतात.”
“आपल्याकडे असेही अनेक श्रीमंत लोक आहेत ज्यांच्याकडे सध्या पैसा नसतो जसे की उद्योजक. ते सध्या पैसेवाले नसले तरी, ते संपत्ती निर्माण करण्याच्या मार्गावर असतात, कारण ते आपली आर्थिक बुद्धिमत्ता विकसित करत असतात, आणि माझ्या मते तेच खरं धन आहे. त्यामुळे असे लोकही श्रीमंतच आहेत.”

“पण जर तुम्हाला एखादा तरुण दिसला, जो सतत सरकारला दोष देतो, श्रीमंत लोकांना चोर म्हणतो आणि कायम तक्रारी करत बसतो, तर समजा तो गरीब आहे.”
“श्रीमंत लोकांना वाटतं की त्यांना फक्त माहिती आणि प्रशिक्षणाची गरज आहे उड्डाण घेण्यासाठी, तर गरीबांना वाटतं की त्यांना इतरांनी पैसा द्यायला हवा, तेव्हाच ते उड्डाण घेतील.”
“जेव्हा मी म्हणतो की माझी मुलगी गरीबाशी लग्न करणार नाही, तेव्हा मी त्याच्या आर्थिक स्थितीबद्दल नाही बोलत, तर त्याच्या संपत्ती निर्माण करण्याच्या अक्षमतेबद्दल बोलत आहे.”
गेट्स पुढे म्हणाले, “माफ करा, पण बहुतेक गुन्हेगार हे गरीब असतात. त्यांच्याकडे संपत्ती निर्माण करण्याची क्षमता नसते. त्यामुळे जेव्हा ते पैसाआधी पाहतात, तेव्हा त्यांचे भान हरपते, आणि ते चोरी किंवा दरोडे टाकतात.”
“एकदा एका बँकेच्या सुरक्षारक्षकाला पैशांनी भरलेली पिशवी सापडली. त्याने ती थेट बँक मॅनेजरकडे नेऊन दिली. त्या वेळी लोकांनी त्याला मूर्ख म्हटलं. पण त्यांना माहिती नव्हतं की तो माणूस खरं तर श्रीमंत होता फक्त त्याच्याकडे सध्या पैसा नव्हता!”
“एक वर्षानंतर त्या बँकेने त्याला रिसेप्शनिस्ट म्हणून नोकरी दिली. तीन वर्षांनी तो ग्राहक सेवा व्यवस्थापक झाला. दहा वर्षांनी तो त्या बँकेच्या शाखेचा प्रादेशिक व्यवस्थापक झाला! आज तो शेकडो कर्मचाऱ्यांचं व्यवस्थापन करतो आणि त्याचा वार्षिक बोनस त्या पिशवीतल्या पैशांपेक्षा खूप अधिक आहे!”
आणि शेवटी गेट्स म्हणाले, “मित्रांनो, संपत्ती म्हणजे एक मनःस्थिती आहे!”
आता आपल्याला बिल गेट्स यांचा ‘श्रीमंती’कडे पाहण्याचा दृष्टिकोन समजला.
तुमचा काय विचार आहे? तुम्ही स्वतःला श्रीमंत समजता की गरीब?
मनाची संतुलित स्थिती ही माणसाच्या योग्य वृत्तीचे प्रतिबिंब असते. विविध परिस्थितींमध्ये त्याच्या आचरणातूनच त्याचा खरा स्वभाव दिसून येतो.
